Is it hard to look after your own skis?

Waxing your own skis isn't nearly as hard as many people think. When you do it yourself, you know it's been done properly and that your skis are ready for a good day on the mountain. It can also save you money compared with paying for a service in the resort or buying wax and tools in a resort shop.

Why ski wax makes a difference

Wax protects the base from drying out and helps the skis glide. Freshly waxed skis are faster, easier to turn and more fun to ski. Sharp edges matter just as much: they give you grip on hard snow and ice, so the skis hold the line you choose. A good rule of thumb is to wax your skis before every trip, and more often if you ski a lot.

What you need to wax and tune your skis

  • Ski wax: bars for hot waxing, plus liquid wax and sprays for a quick top-up between ski days.
  • Waxing iron: melts the wax into the base at an even temperature. Never use a clothes iron, as the temperature isn't stable enough.
  • Scraper: a plastic scraper removes excess wax once it has cooled.
  • Brushes: brushing opens up the structure of the base after scraping, so the skis glide better.
  • Edge tools: files and edge sharpeners keep the edges sharp for grip on hard snow.
  • Cork: used to rub wax into the base, especially on cross-country skis.

Wax for alpine and cross-country skis
