The safe, high-performance, easy-to-use waterproofing for down-filled clothing and gear. Adds durable water repellency, reduces weight gain, ensures down insulation and breathability is maintained in cold and damp weather.
Your down products can absorb water for the simple reason that it is dirty. Try cleaning it with Nikwax Down Wash first, and if it's relatively new, or has recently been re-impregnated, durable water repellency (DWR) will be revitalized just from the cleaning itself. However, once the garment has been thoroughly worn, add DWR by using Nikwax Down Proof? but only after cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash? This adds DWR to the outside of the gear, as well as to its down filling.
For best results, first remove all non-washable parts, then wash in Nikwax Down Wash? Drying between washing and waterproofing is not necessary. Shake well before use. Follow the washing instructions.
- Remove soap residue from the soap drawer.
- Place the clean garment in the machine.
- Use 150 ml. for 1 garment.
- Wash at 30 degrees.
To preserve the waterproofing, always wash in Nikwax Down Wash? Do not use fabric softener
To get as much water out of the down as possible it is best to spin the garment several times, each time by increasing the spin speed incrementally. Wet down is heavy, if the garment is spun too quickly while it still contains large amounts of water, it can risk damaging the inner chambers.
Nikwax Down Proof? requires no heat to develop its DWR. However, tumble drying is recommended to ensure the down is dried thoroughly and as quickly as possible. Leaving down in a wet or damp state can risk damaging it completely. Tumble dry according to the manufacturer's instructions on low heat until all lumps have disappeared. Make sure there is enough space in the dryer to accommodate the garment when dry, as the garment will return to its original size during drying.
You can help restore the fullness of the down by repeatedly shaking the clumps apart during the drying process.
After drying, it is recommended to air the garment/equipment for at least one day in a warm and dry place before packing.
